So this unit is based on the same cpu (BCM4718) and switch (BCM53115) as the RT-N16 but achives over triple it's routing performance. What kind of black magic is Linksys using in it's firmware?

Yea that's true but what about Wan to Lan (686.8Mbps vs 141.1Mbps) and Lan to Wan (688.6Mbps vs 143.3Mbps) throughput, that's a very big difference on more or less the same hardware.

Linksys uses kernel 2.4 for this router' firmware, which is known to have better throughput than K26. Besides, they included "fast NAT" as well, and that probably speeds it up even more - unless...

I guess if it is successful then we will see it in most future routers now. My ADSL is only 16Mbps, I can't notice any difference at all here with it enabled.

No, it is used by Ethernet driver as well as by WiFi driver, so it should affect both - wired and wireless - clients.
